7. Summary of some main contents
7.1. Research object and scope
7.1.1. Research object
The doctoral thesis aims to develop the faculty, focusing on faculty criteria, evaluation model and subgroup according to the requirements of research-oriented university.
7.1.2. Research scope
- Research space: Focus on the case of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Data collection for testing the criteria, evaluating and grouping the faculty is accidentally carried out at some member units under VNU.
- Research time: Analyze the data of the VNU faculty development from 2008 to March, 2014. The period is long enough to realize faculty development trend.
- Research content: In terms of human resource development at university, there are many different contents in the faculty development. In the framework of doctoral thesis, the author focuses on the faculty criteria and evaluation model at the request of research-oriented university.
7.2. Research aims and questions
7.2.1. Research aims
In order to supplement the theories of human resource development in general and faculty development at the request of research-oriented university in particular, this doctoral thesis aims to:
- Build the faculty criteria at the request of research-oriented university.
- Build and test the theoretical model of impact among criteria groups.
- Develop faculty evaluation model on the basic of the faculty criteria as requested by the research-oriented university.
- Propose methods to develop the faculty of VNU based on faculty evaluation results.
7.2.2. Research questions
The doctoral thesis focuses on answering the following questions:
Question 1: Which faculty criteria need be applied for the faculty development at the request of the research-oriented university?
Question 2: Which research model is used for testing criteria groups and relationship among those criteria groups?
Question 3: Which model is used for the faculty evaluation based on tested criteria?
Question 4: When the faculty evaluation model as presented in the doctoral thesis is applied for VNU faculty evaluation, what are the results it brings? Accordingly, what is the faculty development mechanism/method for VNU faculty to meet the requirements of the research-oriented university?
7.3. Research methodology
To achieve the objectives of the study, the author has combination between quantitative and qualitative research method. Quantitative research method is used in the stages of designing the survey, gathering information and analyzing data with the support of AMOS 21 software.
The questionnaires are designed with different variables according to the 7-point Likert scale. These variables are selected based on the results of previous studies, practical experiences of VNU, criteria of some university ranking systems and highly-ranked universities in the world. After obtaining answers, the data is encrypted, cleaned and processed with SPSS, AMOS 21 software through steps as follow: conducting descriptive statistics; analyzing data reliability with Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient to eliminate the variables having correlation coefficient of variables and small sum; applying exploratory factor analysis (EFA) for removing the variables with small parameters through testing factor loading coefficient and extracted variances; carrying out confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test how well the variables represent for factors; and applying linear structural model for showing the relationship of the latent variables as well as testing hypotheses of the study.
Qualitative research method is also conducted to gather the opinions from experts about criteria weights and evaluation for faculty. On the basis of the obtained criteria and weights, the doctoral thesis builds fuzzy multiple criteria decision making (fuzzy MCDM) model to assess and group the faculty. Fuzzy MCDM model includes the main steps: identifying the selection ratio in correspondence with criteria; determining criteria weights; normalizing ratio value of the options for objective criteria; developing member functions; defuzzificating, ranking and grouping options.
7.3. The new contributions of the doctoral thesis
Beside the contributions of theory-based systematization of the research-oriented university, including characteristics of research-oriented university, faculty criteria, evaluation model…, the doctoral thesis has some new contributions below:
Firstly, build faculty criteria, conditions for faculty development to meet the requirements of research-oriented university.
Secondly, contribute to the development of SEM model (using AMOS 21 software) in analyzing, evaluating and testing the faculty criteria; conditions for faculty development; identifying the relevant relationships (internal impact among the latent variables: grouping criteria and condition variables for faculty development).
Thirdly, build new model (Fuzzy MCDM model) to evaluate and group the faculty based on the tested criteria, applying for the case of VNU.
Fourthly, propose methods for VNU faculty development at the request of research-oriented university (based on faculty criteria, evaluation results and subgroup).
