This book forms the international theoretical and practical basis for the establishment and development of cross-border economic zones (CBEZ); assess the policy and the situation of economic cooperation in border and development of border economic zones in Vietnam; on that basis, evaluate the conditions for establishing and developing CBEZs in Vietnam. The book is a research product of the project "Scientific evidence for the establishment and development of cross-border economic zones in Vietnam” (KX.01.09/16-20), led by Assoc.Prof.PhD. Nguyen Anh Thu. The Asia Research Center at Vietnam National University, Hanoi sponsors the publication of this book.

In chapter 1, based on the theory of regional economic integration, the economic cooperation zone, the authors synthesize the definition of CBEZ systematically, the conditions of establishment and development of CBEZ.

In chapter 2, the authors analyze and evaluate the cases of the border economic zones in some countries in the Americas (the United States, Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), Asia (China, Thailand and some countries in the Greater Mekong sub-region) and Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ukraine etc.), drawing lessons for Vietnam in the process of establishing and developing cross-border economic zones.

In Chapter 3, the authors analyze and evaluate the situation of economic cooperation in border and development of border economic zones in Vietnam. Specifically, the authors review and evaluate the current policies for border economic cooperation, pilot CBEZ model; while review and evaluate the policies imposed in China, Laos and Cambodia.

Chapter 4 of the book summarizes the results of surveys, in-depth interviews, field research to assess the conditions for establishment and development of CBEZ in 6 border provinces of Vietnam, including 4 provinces bordering China, 1 province bordering Laos and 1 province bordering Cambodia, thereby giving some proposals to Vietnam.
