Launching Ceremony of Vietnam - Japan Productivity Promotion Initiative

On 22nd January 2016, Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research, VNU University of Economics and Business held the Launching Ceremony of Vietnam - Japan Productivity Promotion Initiative.


Vietnam - Japan Productivity Promotion Initiative (abbreviated as VJPP) is a program established by Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB).

Introducing about the program at the ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh - Director of VEPR said, during development process of VEPR, the objectives of the Institute is to establish research centers of Vietnam's major partners (including Japan) to provide policy advice, contributing to improvement of international cooperation quality in Vietnam.

The goal of VJPP is to become a center of research and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in the new context. Research and training activities of the program based on experience and knowledge transfer from Japan for Vietnam, towards the ultimate goal of promoting labor productivity, helping Vietnam escape the middle income trap and become a modern industrialized country.


The main activities of VJPP include: (i) conducting researches combined with policy advice at local and state levels in the fields of development policies, especially policies for sectors and human resources, with the aim of supporting the knowledge and technology transfer from Japan to Vietnam; (ii) organizing training programs on human resources, including training on Japanese economic and social knowledge and working skills following Japanese conditions of employment.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh also said that, after a year of initial warm-up activities, VJPP program was established with many favorable conditions, including support from leaders of the UEB and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Additionally, many lecturers/staff of the UEB previously studying/conducting research in Japan can support for the operation of the program.

Delivering the speech at the ceremony, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son – Rector of the UEB said, the University highly appreciated the idea of VEPR in establishing VJPP. In addition to transfer of Japanese experiences and knowledge to promote labor productivity, the Initiative also contributes to increase the exchange of knowledge, skills and ideas among business managers, policy makers and scientists of Vietnam and Japan; especially exchanges among lecturers/researchers of the UEB and Japanese scientists, thereby enhancing the capacity of lecturers/researchers of the University.

Recently, VJPP in collaboration with JICA have made some assessment on social and economic development of some provinces, such as Ha Nam, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Tay Ninh, thereby, providing data for Japan to design supporting programs for economic and social development, at the same time, giving advice for development orientation.

Towards 45th anniversary of establishment of bilateral diplomatic relation between Vietnam and Japan, VJPP also proposes some projects, including training courses and exchange programs for students. The projects aim at organizing fifteen short courses for four hundred and fifty Vietnamese students and culture exchange for forty five students in three years (2016 – 2018).
