Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023: Vietnam National University increases in quality of both scientific research and teaching

On October 12th, 2022, The Times Higher Education ranking organization publishes the results of the World University Rankings 2023 (THE WUR 2023). Accordingly, Vietnam National University (VNU) continues to maintain its position in the 1001-1200 group of 1799 ranked higher education institutions. Compared to the 2022 ranking period, THE WUR 2023 has an increase by 240 participating of higher education institutions and 137 ranked higher education institutions.

Implementing the VNU Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, VNU aims to continuously improve the quality of teaching and scientific research, transfer research results, towards the philosophy of sustainable development, the influence and position of VNU. These strategies and activities have been concretized in the ranking results of THE WUR 2023 with VNU increasing its ranking points in 2 criteria groups: Citation (up from 41.5 points in THE WUR 2022 to 45,9 points in THE WUR 2023) and Science and Technology Income (up from 36.6 points in THE WUR 2022 to 38.9 points in THE WUR 2023).

 

In the remaining 3 criteria groups, VNU maintains the leading position in 6 higher education institutions in Vietnam in terms of teaching quality - a criterion that shows the quality of teaching activities of a higher education institution through the assessment of the international academic community.

Also according to the results of THE WUR 2023, the top 5 higher education institutions in the world are the University of Oxford, Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Science and Technology.

In Asia, the top higher education institutions include: Peking University and Tsinghua University (China), National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

THE WUR Rankings evaluate universities globally based on research into a university's core missions, according to sets of standardized metrics to provide comprehensive and fair comparisons. Based on the scientific database SCOPUS independent surveys and university data, THE’s scoring and data processing is provided by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). , an independent, professional, performance-monitoring audit organization.

The criteria of THE WUR 2023 remain the same as the recent world rankings, according to 5 groups of performance criteria including:

1. Teaching (learning environment) with a weight of 30 ranking points. %

2. Research (volume, income and reputation) with a weight of 30%

3. Citations (influence of research) with a weight of 30%

4. Internationalization (of staff, students and research) with a weight of 7.5%

5. Income from knowledge and technology transfer with a weight of 2.5%

 

Before that, in June 2022, VNU had the fifth consecutive year to be in the group of 801 -1000 of the QS WUR rankings and there was an increase in position in key fields when 6/51 fields were ranked (of which 1 new field was ranked for the first time is Engineering - Electrical & Electronic; 4/5 of the fields increased the ranking position
