Purposes for study:

- To study systematically, in theory and practice, the basis for development of public transportation services in urban areas,

- To analyze the factual situation of public transportation services in Hanoi, then to propose the basic solutions to promote the development of these services in Hanoi

New contributions:

- To systematize some basic theories about public transportation services in urban areas such as: concepts, characteristics, roles, affecting factors, and criteria for evaluating the quality.
- To learn from some experiences in developing public transportation services of some countries such as India, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Germany...
- To analyze the true status of public transportation services in Hanoi since 2000 up to now - strong points and weak points.
- To propose some solutions to promote the development of public transportation services in Hanoi.
