Distinguished guests!
Dear colleagues, students, learners and research students of UEB!
First of all, let me represent all UEB staff, lecturer, and students to express heartfelt thanks to all the distinguished guests attending in the announcement of VNU University of Economics and Business establishment and opening ceremony of 2007-2008 academic year today.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Board of Management of Ministry of Education and Training, VNU Party’s executive committee and Board of Management for having trust in me to assign the post of UEB Rector. This great responsibility will give me chances to look for solutions for issues that have been concerning myself and the University. Those are:
- How to meet students’ aspiration of studying and researching in an academic, humane and practical environment so that the society would greet them after graduation with respect and warmth;
- How to meet the needs of enterprises, government and society of high-quality human resources with firm knowledge, skills and ability to combine traditional values with modern science, those who have both practicality and in-sight theory...;
- How to satisfy expectations of the university’s teachers and staff of the opportunity to teach, research, contribute and develop in an highly pedagogical as well as improving living quality of individuals and families;
­­­­­- How to inherit and develop the tradition of solidarity and respectful achievements that generations of former leaders, teachers and students of the university had been building for a long time with all their hearts, creating firm foundation for the establishment of our university today;
- How to promote strengths of a successor, a member of national education with structure of interdisciplinary, highly autonomous, given with government’s priority of infrastructure, human resources and technology.
In order to seek for solutions to those concerns, since the establishment, the development strategy of UEB has identified goals, mission and core values and set forth basic implementation directions for UEB’s growth in the near future.
Our university has defined the specialization of outputs in three main areas of operations which have strong connections and mutual support: education, scientific research and services.
Education outputs focus on training enterprise managers and economic analysts.
Research is centered on access to new theories of economics, management and business administration that combines oriental cultural tradition with Western modern way of thinking to form economic schools in Vietnam and interdisciplinary research results which are highly practical.
Service provision concentrates high quality counseling services of policy relating to economics, management and business administration, together with provision of life skills for students.
We are ambitious enough to make the UEB one of the leading universities in Vietnam, ranked among prestigious universities in the region and all over the world in training, research and counseling in terms of entrepreneurship, economic analysis and interdisciplinary research of economic issues.
So as to realize development objectives, the UEB will follow a flexible and proactive model that sticks to factual requirements. It will be an education institute that connects with market, society and government.
Regarding training, the UEB will not focus on quantity but quality of training, gradually decrease towards eliminating massive training, in-office education and gradually increase high quality education programs of international standards as well as short-term training courses to meet the needs of organizations and enterprises.
Content of training program relates economic content with natural science, technology, social science and humanity. This difference will generate new training majors, meeting requirements of the modern economics.
Latest education techniques of advanced educations will be applied, especially to the process of preparing training programs. Curricula of a major will be commented by entrepreneurs so that it produces the best human resources for entrepreneurs’ needs. The university is also going to organize training programs by request of enterprises to overcome the factual situation of impractical trainings as witnessed locally.
I would like to emphasize that there would be businessmen and managers of various areas who not only take part in lecturing but also in management at the UEB. This can be seen as a breakthrough move that the UEB is going to take.
The UEB will follow credit-based training model, in which curricula are designed flexibly as modules whereby learners are active in their learning plan. Moreover, UEB’s training programs are not only subject to connection with other VNU universities, leading domestic universities as well as leading regional and international universities. Quality of training majors will be step by step tested by not only VNU but also by prestigious international testing organizations.
In the area of research, theUEB is starting the development of strong research teams, research networks with three main streams: fundamental, inter-sector and serving for policy-making. The university is combining research with training and enterprises through access and participation in national research programs, international research projects, in line with demand of government, enterprises and actively mobilizing diversified sources of financing (both state budget and non-state budget) to develop.
The UEB will also make breakthrough moves such as inviting, gathering excellent businessmen, foreign experts having high qualifications to participate, or even take main charge of research projects of the UEB. Besides promoting research activities of teachers, UEB also has mechanism to encourage and nourish students’ science ideas, business initiatives by organizing science seminars, young researchers club, businessmen nursery…
With regard to services, UEB will push up operations of the existing development economic research centre together with establishment of training, research and technology exchange services centers such as “businessmen nursery”, international training centers; student counseling, life skills trainings and formation of joint-stock companies… the UEB’s target is that until 2022, services activities needs to achieve high professionalism and gainings from this area accounts for about ¾ of total turnover of the university. Consequently, the UEB’s gate is always open and welcomes all partners, especially enterprises aiming at mutually beneficial cooperation in different areas.
Distinguished guests!
We are well aware that to achieve those ambitious goals, we will have to overcome a lot of difficulties and challenges. Those are current difficulties regarding facilities and equipments, the lack of staff and lecturers both in quantity and quality, state of inactivity in thinking and readiness to change teaching and learning, management and governance methodology. Those include strong competition from universities which already had prestige and market brand locally, from joint venture and branches of foreign with international standard training programs and methods.
However, we are confident of success because success needs, in the first place, big thinking and most importantly that thinking suits with the university capability and development expectations, with common development trends of domestic and international educations and meets requirements of market, enterprises and socio-economy.
We are confident of success because we are not standing alone and we usually receives strong and efficient support in all areas (spirit, facilities to human resources and mechanism) from relating agencies and individuals: Ministry of Education and Training; Ministry of Science and Technology; Vietnam National University Hanoi..., from enterprises, international organizations, universities, research institutes, alumni; students parents and from current students. Your full attendance of distinguished guests - representing those above mentioned entities - today, in this hall is one of the most apparent proofs of the support.
Especially, the support will be illustrated in the cooperation agreement signing ceremony shortly, between UEB with strategic partners - local and international successful enterprises and education organizations.
We always bear in mind that with the consensus of the UEB’s lecturers, students as well as the support, confidence and facilitation of VNU, MOET, domestic and foreign partners... the UEB’s ambitions are not only fancy dreams.
For those reasons, right from beginning, we have determined to build up operating charter based on core values, among which focus is put on harmonized cooperation and development. Strong and efficient cooperation in Management Board, between Management Board with functional divisions, faculties, lecturers and students as well as between UEB with functional departments and members of VNU; between UEB with domestic and foreign partners, especially with companies will help the “UEB boat” keep its track, get ready to overcome obstacles and steadily reach ocean.
Harmony in every activities of UEB, from common affairs to individual and collective benefits gives motivation to UEB’s development, so that everyone aims at the same target; besides adopting new and advanced elements, UEB will always respect, acquire and promote tradition, especially from predecessors.
I would like to take this opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to generations of lecturers, learners, students who contributed with all their hearts to the building and development of the former Faculty of Business and Economics which is now University of Business and Economics.
Once again, I am grateful to Education and Training ministers, party executive committee, VNU Management for entrusting me to hold the post of UEB Rector. I promise, with the help of Party Committee, UEB Management Board to enhance solidarity, proactiveness, progressively overcome difficulties, try every way to find solutions, explore and promote to the best existing conditions and resources together with the UEB’s staff and students to achieve objectives set.
I would also like to thank all local and international partners for their support and effective collaboration for the development of the UEB.
We believe, with the values we are pursuing, with high quality of education, research and service, with proactive, flexible and breakthrough operations, the UEB will be home to scientists, managers, businessmen and students who are dedicated to our country’s development.
Dear students,
This is the first academic year we are operating with the name of the UEB. From now on, we implement credit-based education and deploy the first international standard training program - Bachelor of Business Administration.
This international standard program aims not only at providing our country with human resources of international level but also moving towards scale expansion, attracting international students. This is a big opportunity for UEB to progressively improve training quality and soon reach regional and international standards.
