Acceptance of Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2012 project

On 31st October 2012, the research team of the Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), University of Economics and Business successfully defended the research project "Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2012". The project was among the scientific researches granted by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), directed by Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of VEPR.


The Acceptance Council comprises of seven members: Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang, Vice President of VNU was the Chairman. Critical commissioner was Dr. Dinh Quang Ty - Chairman, Scientific Secretary of Central Theoretical Council. Members of Acceptance Council included Truong Dinh Tuyen, Senior Economist Expert, Member of the Advisory Council on National Monetary Policies; Pham Chi Lan, Senior Economist Expert , former Vice Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI); Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Hong Tung, Head of Science and Technology Department; Dr. Vu Anh Dung, Vice Rector of University of Economics and Business and Dr. Nguyen Dang Minh, Head of the Office of Research & Partnership Development, VNU University of Economics and Business.
Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, on behalf of the research team presented a summary of research methodologies as well as achievements of the project. In addition to the two published books, in both English and Vietnamese, the research team also extracted excellent research results to publish in major economic journals in Vietnam.
After listening to the presentation, each member of the Acceptance Council commented on the project. In general, the Council evaluated the project as a significant work with objective and scientific results based on diverse and reliable data sources. The title of the Report “Facing the Challenges of Structural Reforms” was reasonably connected with the title of the previous Report “The Economy at a Crossroad”, simultaneously approach appropriately to hot issues, and also answered a lot of questions from policymakers as well as the whole society on the restructuring process of Vietnam. Some Commissioners also emphasized that the Report has received much attention from both domestic and international prestigious scholars and had certain influences on the society.
The Council members, who had opportunities to follow the research team since the Report was just the outline to intermediate products, and finally the finished product in the form of books, highly appreciated the spirit and self-improvement efforts and expressed sympathy with the research team's difficulties in the process of the implementation and brand-name affirmation of the Report.
The Council members also suggested that the research team should harmonize between solutions to annually hot issues and an overall and long-term picture to reflect the development tendency of the economy and direct to more academic scientific products, such as papers published on international scientific journals. They also encouraged the team to have further effort to promote the Report from the current position to the basis for policymaking of the leading agencies in Vietnam.
After two hours of discussion, the Council members agreed to rank the Project Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2012 as Excellence, the highest level in the assessment by VNU.
