Launching workshop Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2010: “Choices for sustainable growth”

On 8th April 2010, University of Economics - Vietnam National University held the workshop to release the Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2010: ”Stable macroeconomic for sustainable growth” conducted by Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR).


This report is a main research production of the strategic research Program ”Economic theories and macroeconomic policy in condition of International Economic Integration of Vietnam” of University of Economics - Vietnam National University. Hanoi.

The Report this year is 400 pages in length, includes 8 chapters and 2 appendices: “The world economy in 2009: bottom out of the recession and recover”; “Vietnam macro-economy in 2009”; “Evaluation the interest rate subsidy program in 2009”; “Policy options for the exchange rate in the current macroeconomic context”; “Vietnam trade in process of  East Asia economic integration”; “Evaluation the role of  industrial zones in Vietnam economic development”; “Outlook for Vietnam economy in 2010 and policy implication”.

The workshop attracted a large and enthusiastic participation of more than 40 media agencies, such as VOV, VTV1, VITV, InfoTV and press agencies as Tuoi tre News, Vietnam Economic Times, Vietnamnet, eFinance, VnExpress…
On behalf of the authors, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh - Director of VEPR, Editor of the Report - briefly presented key points of the Report. The authors consider that in 2010, Vietnam economy will have opportunity to out of economic downturn cycle and reach a higher growth level. However, the Government, enterprises and each individual have still to face economic instabilities which existed for a long times. These issues include: trade deficit, economic growth based on natural recourse-intensive and labor-intensive, raising investment capital bases on credit expansion, trade-off inflation for growth..... Basing on the considering the changes in world economy in 2010, the authors gave implication of Vietnam economic policies which can generate sustainable growth and enhance the real qualify of GDP growth index.
Giving feedbacks at the workshop, Dr. Le Dang Doanh, Dr. Vo Tri Thanh - senior experts in macro-economics and Dr.Vũ Viết Ngoạn - Deputy Director of Committee of Economy, highly appreciated the scientific and modern methods as well as independent opinions of the young authors used for evaluating and suggesting the policies to solve the Vietnam current economic issues. The commentors agreed that inspite of having some ” slight weak points”, the Report has ”many strong points”. Thus, if being perfected, this Report will be considered as a excelent research production and it is necessary to be maintained and promoted to ensure the character ” unity in diversity” of existing Vietnam Economic Reports.

 The representative of VNU, Assoc.Prof. Pham Hong Trung, Deputy Director of Science and Technology Department affirmed that the Vietnam Annual Economic Report was a serious research production, a main research object which will be included in annual science and technology budget of Vietnam National University.
