CIECI 2022: International Economic Cooperation and Integration – Journey to the new FTAs

The International Conference on International Economic Cooperation and Integration: Journey to the new FTAs (CIECI 2022) organized by the VNU University of Economics and Business in collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Vietnam; University of Adelaide, Australia; Rangsit University, Thailand; University of Economics and Law, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Foreign Trade University; Sofia University, Bulgaria and National Chengchi University, Taiwan.

   The conference attracted the participation of nearly 200 guests from government agencies (Government Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Planning and Investment...), representatives of the embassy of Australia, national and international researchers and scientists, policy makers, experts, international scholars, lecturers, students of the VNU-UEB and the mass media.
    The full-day conference featured two keynote speeches with two roundtable sessions, focusing on: (1) The formation and prospects of the new generation FTAs; (2) Vietnam’s implementation of the new generation FTAs in the morning session and four parallel sessions in the afternoon. The later session focus on the four main topics: (1) Impacts of FTAs on International Trade; (2) FTAs and Sustainable Growth; (3) FTAs and Sector Development and (4) Economic Integration Issues.

    In the morning session, Prof. Peter Draper - Director of the Institute of International Trade, University of Adelaide, Australia with the presentation: "New Generation FTAs: Present and Future", analyzed the key factors leading to the change in international trade patterns. economic. From the assessment of the challenges and limitations that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has to face, with consideration of countries’ participation in FTAs and scope and content covered in FTAs, Prof. Peter Draper affirmed that new generation FTAs are suitable alternatives for countries pursuing the strategy of economic opening.

    In her presentation, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector of UEB presented the topic: "Vietnam's journey to new generation FTAs" emphasizing Vietnam's activeness and dynamism in negotiation, participation and implementation of FTAs, as well as Vietnam's integration into global trade. With opportunities and challenges posed to Vietnamese businesses in the process of international economic integration through FTAs, the paper highlights the important role of trade facilitation.

    In the afternoon, the four parallel sessions chaired by domestic and international professors. The speakers focused on assessing fluctuations in the world economy such as the Covid 19 pandemic, energy crisis, political tensions and new trends such as the 4.0 technology revolution, digital transformation, and the circular economy, green economy, boom of e-commerce etc. and how that will affect the formation and development of the new generation FTA. The parallel sessions also introduced the new points of future FTAs compared to the current. Besides, the contents related to the process of participating in new generation FTAs of developed and developing countries, difficulties and challenges from the perspectives of different groups of countries was also discussed.
