Nearly 500 scholars attending YSI Asia Convening 2019

Young Scholars Initiative Asia Convening 2019 being held in Hanoi from August 12 to 15
Nearly 500 scholars from all over the world are attending the Young Scholars Initiative Asia Convening 2019 (YSI Asia Convening 2019) in Hanoi from August 12 to 15 to discuss new economic thinking and to present their research.

The event is being organized by Institute for New Economic Thinking’s Young Scholars Initiative in cooperation with VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB). It offers a chance for young economists from many research fields to meet, share ideas, and inspire academic work related to the social challenges of the 21st century.

VNU President Nguyen Kim Son told the conference that Vietnam is a developing country and increasingly integrating into the Asian and global economies. “Choosing Vietnam and VNU as a destination to discuss Asian economic issues in the context of the global economy is a meaningful option,” he added. “I hope that this conference will create an open forum to encourage and nurture new ideas and economic thinking. We also expect young economists to come up with new, practical and feasible ideas and initiatives that can become scientific forecasts and knowledge, contributing to resolving issues in contemporary economies while contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam and the world.”

Prof.Dr Danny Quah, Principal of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said Vietnam has signed or is negotiating a number of new free trade agreements with major economies. “ASEAN and Vietnam need to actively contribute to the creation of a new world order,” he added. “In my opinion, the new world order should be divided according to needs and supply. We need to understand our position as a customer who stands on the side of the new world market order.”

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Truc Le, Rector of UEB, told  that through the conference, Vietnam and the VNU as well as UEB will become known as a destination to discuss issues affecting the region, connecting professionals with teachers and students on global issues. “After speaking with young scholars, I can summarize their evaluation of Vietnam’s economy as having three outstanding features: patience, dynamism, and political stability,” he added. “I hope the issues discussed at this conference will have a positive impact on Vietnam’s economy.”

This is the first time YSI Regional Convening has been held in Asia. Previous regional editions took place in Trento (Europe), Buenos Aires (Latin America), Harare (Africa), and Los Angeles (North America). Throughout the four-day event, young scholars will present papers on numerous subject areas, including cooperation, development, regional issues, economic history, law and economics, gender inequality, sustainability, urban economics, history of economic thought, and others.
