More potential cooperation opportunities available to UEB -VNU

From 17th to 18th October 2008, the University of Economics and Business (UEB) - Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), cooperated with the Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs, Princeton University, for an international seminar focusing on international relations and policy.

VNU-UEB and the Woodrow Wilson School, along with other participants including the Asian Research Faculty of Princeton University, the Pacific Century Institute and the Mike & Maureen Mansfield Institution participated in the seminar “Impacts of Globalization on East Asia and Vietnam” at Princeton University. Researchers with an active interest in Vietnam from universities such as Princeton University, Harvard Business School, the National University of Seoul, Johns Hopkins University and Iowa University also participated in this seminar. From Vietnam, there were four University of Economics and Business’ representatives, including Assoc.Prof.Dr, Phung Xuan Nha, Rector; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Vice Rector; Dr. Vu Quoc Huy, Lecturer of Economics Development Faculty, and Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet, Dean of Cooperation and Development Department.

During the two days seminar, representatives held in depth discussions surrounding globalization and its impact on Vietnam and East Asian countries. Examples of the issues discussed included the role of macro economics related to opportunities and challenges presented by Globalization to the financial sector, banking and healthcare system, State and society management as well as education and training. At the seminar, Professor Paul Krugman, recently awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2008 showcased the economic implications of the globalization process.

During the seminar, the Vietnamese representative group, lead by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phung Xuan Nha and Prof. Paul Krugman met and discussed issues regarding possible cooperation between Vietnam and United States in economic and social research areas. Assoc.Prof.Dr Phung Xuan Nha also delivered a letter of recommendation from Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affair for University of Economics and Business - VNU which was an invitation for Prof. Paul Krugman, Princeton University researchers, to visit Vietnam provide advice for the Government of Vietnam on issues related to the macro economy and social-economic policy in period 2010 - 2020.

This was the second international seminar to have originated from the current cooperation framework between UEB-VNU and PCI Institute (the first was held at the VNU in 2006). After this seminar, the representative group of UEB-VNU worked with research institutes and researchers who have an interest in Vietnam in order to design long-time research programs between the two parties. There was prior agreement surrounding some joint research topics, mostly related to sustainable development and social security, sustainable macro economy policy under the complicated conditions of the world economy and other issues regarding to topics raised at the seminar. Thus, this is an international seminar that University of Economics and Business successfully participated in, expanding research cooperation opportunities with the one of the most famous and prestigious research institutes within the United States and the world.
